Introduction

As an outdoorsman in Wisconsin the beginning of June is a trying time. Turkey season has just ended; the White Bass run has slowed down on the Wolf River. Where do you go from here? Is it too early to start scouting for deer? Do you take up a new hobby? Most of us don't need a new addition, nor would our spouses be excited about another addition to your "me time".

For me it's not too early to scout. As the foliage is filling out you can start to see trails and natural paths used by wildlife. Now is the time to find an opening outside of your normal hunting area and observe activity into your area. Many of us are public land hunters meaning there are people out hiking. Try to pattern animals and what they do outside of season. Are they using the same routes you see them using from your tree? Get out and observe. This may not be the time for picking your next honey hole, but it is the time to start thinking about what deer or turkey or whatever your target does throughout the year.

If fishing is your thing this will be a spot for you as well. We try to get out year-round. Get in the reeds with a slip bobber and a worm. A summer fish fry is always a way to bring people together. Use your local bait shops as a resource for what's biting and what lakes. I'm all about going back to the pre-social media days and talk to people. This is a primary focus for me this year. Stop trying to be the tough guy that knows everything and actively listen to others.

Whatever your level of expertise now is the time to get outdoors. Learn a new area, make a new friend. Step out of your comfort zone and learn something new about your activity. Many times, it's slow down and observe.
